The Nebraska State Fair and State Fair Park:
In 1868, the Nebraska State Fair started along the banks of the Missouri River and then moved to several locations including Nebraska City, Brownville, Lincoln, and Omaha. In 1901, the Legislature selected Lancaster County Fairgrounds as the permanent site for the annual Nebraska State Fair. Since then, the fairgrounds have grown from the initial 123 acres to 251 acres. Today, the fairgrounds are located within the city limits of the state capital in Lincoln and are called, "State Fair Park."
State Fair Park is located approximately 3 miles from downtown Lincoln in the northern section of the city. The 251 acre site contains 27 buildings. Twelve buildings are rented for non-State Fair use throughout the year. All buildings total over 1,200,000 gross square feet of space.
The Nebraska State Fair will be celebrating 140 years of operations during the 2009 Nebraska State Fair scheduled for August 28 through September 7. Like past years, the 140th edition of the Nebraska State Fair will be a time to celebrate Nebraska’s talent through competition, achievements, and accomplishments. It will also be a time to enjoy the hundreds of attractions including many entertainers, exhibits, midway rides and delicious food. With a history older than the state itself, the Nebraska State Fair combines tradition with innovation to produce an educational and exciting event for the entire family.
Our Mission For The Nebraska State Fair:
“The purpose of the Nebraska State Fair is to educate and entertain, recognize individual achievements, celebrate excellences in agriculture, industry, commerce, arts, science and technology and reinforce a sense of community and shared culture for the citizens of Nebraska.“ This mission statement was adopted by the State Fair Board and the Nebraska State Fair in March of 2000.
The Nebraska State Fair is your eleven-day event where you can celebrate your talents, accomplishments, industry achievements, dedication to education, and your enthusiasm of being a Nebraskan. That’s what the Nebraska State Fair has been about for 140 years and that is what it will continue to be about….a celebration of you!
