There are lots of ways you can participate in the Nebraska State Fair. Some contests require pre-registration or nomination, while others are more spontaneous. But all showcase the best that you have to offer. And it doesn't hurt if you get to eat a lot of pie in the process!

The following were some of the contests featured at the 2008 Nebraska State Fair:
Ag Family of the Day
August 23, 24, 30, 31 and September 1, 2008 – Located in the Open Air Auditorium 
Presented by Nebraska Farm Bureau, the Nebraska State Fair and KLKN TV Channel 8 of Lincoln, five Nebraskan farm and ranch families were nominated, selected, and honored as the State Fair “Ag Family of the Day.” Families were honored at a ceremony in Ag Hall, highlighted in a KLKN TV newscast and featured in the daily State Fair parade. They also received gate and midway passes, lodging, a plaque and other prizes. The 2008 Ag Families of the Day were:
- Aug. 23: Andy, Ellen, Lauren, Leah and Lacey Schmidt of Deshler
- Aug. 24: Terry, Dena, Bri and April Mills of Arnold
- Aug. 30: Terry, Debbie, Hannah, Heidi, and Hunter Borg of Allen
- Aug. 31: Mary, Kevin, Robin, Barry, Donna, and Jenny Stuart with Brenda and Jim Billingsly of Bayard
- Sept. 1: Larry, Janet, Amanda, and Aaron Neujahr of Osceola
Family Fun Tent
August 22 through September 1, 2008 – Located in the Kidz Zone
Presented by Verizon Wireless, the Nebraska State Fair Family Fun Tent offers something for everyone in the Kidz Zone. Children of all ages and their families were invited to participate in numerous FREE family fun games, contests, and creative crafts. The fun started in the Kidz Zone, which is located in the heart of the fair grounds. The Kidz Zone times were 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm Monday through Friday and 1:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day.
Galaxy of Stars Talent Search
August 30 & 31, 2008- Located in the Open Air Auditorium
Nebraskans had the opportunity to sing, dance, or play their way for a chance to win over $5,000 in cash prizes, recording sessions, or trophies at the Galaxy of Stars® Talent Search. The Nebraska State Fair hosted the GALAXY OF STARS® Talent Search in the Nebraska State Fair’s Open Air Auditorium on August 30 and 31. Contestants competed in five categories, including vocal, dance, instrumental, variety, bands, and songwriting. For information, please see the Galaxy of Stars® official website www.galaxyofstars.us.
Kid’s Pedal Pull
August 23, 2008 – Located in the Grandstand
Participants from across the state participated in one of the biggest youth participation sports at the Nebraska State Fair.
Ultimate Beef Bowl
August 24, 2008 – Located at Ag Hall stage
Presented by the Nebraska Beef Council, families preregistered for the chance to test their knowledge of beef in the areas of cooking, nutrition, production, and by-products. Lucky families won one of the following prizes of a MHP Deluxe Heritage Series Gas Grill, a Tailgate Grill, or a Kansas City Getaway weekend after the competition that began at 12:00 pm.  U.S. Army Push Up Contest
August 22 through September 1, 2008 – Located at the main intersection of Main Street
At 9:00 pm nightly, the U.S. Army held a contest to see who could perform the most push-ups!
